OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Yellow Transportation, a subsidiary of Yellow Roadway Corporation (Nasdaq: YELL), today announced Charles C. "Charlie" Brown, a Kansas City, MO-area driver for Yellow Transportation, has been named the American Trucking Associations (ATA) 2004 National Truck Driver of the Year. This is considered the highest honor a professional driver can receive from the ATA.

Brown has logged over 3,275,000 miles without a preventable accident in his 36 years on the road. He competed for the national title against professionals nominated by state trucking associations.

"We are extremely proud of Charlie Brown and his level of professionalism. We want to congratulate him on upholding the highest standards in the industry," said James Welch, President and CEO of Yellow Transportation. "He personifies the commitment to safety and quality standards that Yellow holds for all employees."

Brown was selected ATA National Driver of the Year in competition with entries from 30 other state trucking associations, each of whom had been named a driver of the month and driver of the year by their respective state association. Criteria for the honor included safe and courteous driving, driver education, civic activities and contributions to company operating efficiency.

"The trucking industry can be proud of professionals like Charlie Brown who work hard every day to deliver what America needs -- safely, efficiently, and on time," said Bill Graves, ATA President and CEO.

Brown has participated in state truck driving competitions since 1978. He has been a national contender since 1985. Brown has qualified for the National Truck Driving Championships eight times by winning his class at the state level. In addition, he received the ATA Professional Excellence award in 2002. Brown was also chosen in 1973 from thousands of applicants to serve on America's Road Team, an elite group of drivers sponsored by ATA who make public and media appearances promoting highway safety and the trucking industry.
