Yellow Announces Nine Drivers to Compete in National Truck Driving Championship; Two-Time National Grand Champion Returns With Seasoned Team, With Eye On a Third Victory

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(AutomotiveWire)--Aug. 13, 2001--Proud to showcase their exemplary safety record and precision driving skills, nine professional drivers from Yellow Freight will be competing in the 64th annual National Truck Driving Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 22 to 25.

Each of the drivers won their individual classes at the state level, and will be competing for the title of national champion in each division.

"These drivers epitomize the kind of safety standards we strive for at Yellow," said James Welch, President of Yellow Freight System, Inc. "It's also great for us to have previous champions come back and compete again - this team has a focus on quality, not quantity."

The National Truck Driving Championships (sponsored by the American Trucking Association) give professional drivers from across the country a chance to demonstrate their safe driving skills, and compete for the title of National Grand Champion. About 300 drivers will be competing this year in Minneapolis, with events ranging from obstacle course driving to pre-trip vehicle inspection - there are even written and oral examinations.

The state-champion drivers competing from Yellow Freight this year are:

  • Dave Baker, of Oregon, MO - Straight Truck Class Champion

  • Dave Bowers, of Clarksburg, WV - 4 Axle State Champion - Named to America's Road Team for his remarkable driving record.

  • Dave Church, of Blue Springs, MO - 5 Axle Van Class Champion

  • Gerald Cudmore, of Castlewood, SD - 3 Axle Van Class Champion - America's Road Team member 1991

  • Frank DeGeorge, of Suffield, CT - 3 Axle Van Class Champion

  • Bruce Green, of Kansas City, KS - Flatbed State Champion

  • Rick Herbert, of Villa Park, IL - 4 Axle Van Class Champion

  • Ray Simon, of St. Cloud, MN - 4 Axle Van Class Champion - Two-time National Grand Champion winner in 1992 and 1997.

"These drivers have already proven themselves to be 'top of the class' when it comes to handling their vehicles in the safest manner possible," said Dave Knisley, chief representative for Yellow to the National Truck Driving Championships. "All of our employees can take pride in their achievement, and I'm certainly looking forward to watching them compete."
